Windows Phone 8.1 Maps: No Results Found

The Problem

You own a Lumia 521 or a Lumia 520 and after you update the phone to Windows Phone 8.1 (OS version: 8.10.12400.899), the official Maps application will not return any results for searched addresses.  Instead of getting a result on the map, you’ll see “No results found.”  This happens even with valid street addresses that worked fine before the update.

The Solution

I had this problem on my own Lumia 521 (T-Mobile) after I received the over-the-air update for Windows Phone 8.1 in early November 2014.  Here’s how to solve this problem.  You need to do a full-on hard reset of your Lumia phone.  That’s probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but I can assure you that it will work.

Follow these steps to do a hard reset of your Windows Phone:

  1. First to make things easier after doing a hard reset, you will want to turn on the “backup” feature of your Windows Phone.  To do that, navigate to the Settings Menu, then choose “Backup.”  You will want to turn on backup for all three items listed here (apps+settings, text messages, photos+videos).  Note that if these settings weren’t turned on before, that you will want to give your phone time to backup and upload everything.  Don’t forget to connect to a wifi network while you wait for everything to backup.  Once complete, continue on to step 2.
  2. Now you’re ready to reset everything.  Navigate to the Settings menu and choose “About.”  Once in this menu, tap the “reset your phone” button.  At the “Warning” screen, you can choose to erase your SD Memory Card (assuming you have one), but this isn’t necessary.  Tap “yes,” then tap “yes” again to confirm that this is what you want to do.  Your phone will shut down and reboot and go through the resetting process.
  3. After this process completes, your phone will boot up to the “welcome” screen and you’ll go through the “new phone” set up process.  During the set up process you’ll be asked if you want to restore a previous phone backup – you obviously want to choose to do so.
  4. Once you’re all set up, you phone will download all the apps, contact, text messages, and media that were stored on your phone before the reset.  This will take some time.  Note that you will want to be connected to a wifi network while this happens.

And that’s it.  After the hard reset your Maps application will work as intended.  Let me know in the comments if you have other suggestions.
